Salmon Arm, BC - Mark Zengerle's hat trick of special teams goals was the difference as Salmon Arm beat Trail 5-2 on Friday night.
The BCHL's leading scorer notched two power play markers in the first to give the Silverbacks a lead. He then scored shorthanded at the end of the second period to put the game out of reach.
Trail opened the scoring on the power play when Scott Jacklin knocked in a rebound from a Steve Koshey point shot. The Smoke Eaters then couldn't convert on 5 other opportunities with the man advantage.
Mike Betz scored on a one time feed from Nick Sandor early in the third period. The Smokies then out shot the Silverbacks 12-6 in the final frame but couldn't get another goal past Kurt Williams. He made 24 saves on 26 total Trail shots. Kiefer Smiley stopped 22 of 27 shots from Salmon Arm.
Grey Noyes, Corey Chakeen, David Killip and Tyler Gubb had 2 points each for the Silverbacks. Zengerle added an assist to finish with 4 points.
Trail's next action is Saturday night against Vernon. The Smoke Eaters will play the rest of their games in December at the Cominco Arena. The Silverbacks host Penticton.
ON THE TRAIL: Curtis Tonello made his debut for the Smoke Eaters. He took a couple of minor penalties in the first period, but was solid the rest of the game ... Graeme Strukoff is still out of the line-up with a lower body injury. He's still day to day ... Sandor, Koshey and Matt Wilkins got assists on Trail's goals ... The next road game for Trail is back in Salmon Arm on January 3rd.
