2010 Improvement

I've talked some on our broadcasts and on Overtime about the improvements Trail has made since the start of 2010. I figured I'd put my money where my mouth is and actually spell out the difference in the Smokies using stats for the final 20 games of the season. Another impressive aspect of the improvement is that they only played 3 teams with losing records in their last 20.

Record in 2009: 12-24-1-3
Record in 2010: 8-8-0-4

Obviously the most important stat which shows they've found a way to win or at least get the extra point for an overtime loss in 12 of their last 20 games.

Goals in 2009: 144 (3.6 per game)
Goals in 2010: 72 (3.6 per game)

Goals Against in 2009: 188 (4.7 per game)
Goals Against in 2010: 83 (4.15 per game)

While goal scoring is static, the biggest difference between Trail now and Trail earlier in the season is their ability to keep the puck out of their net. The improvement is especially solid given the 8 goals allowed in a game against Salmon Arm and 7 in one of the games with Westside.

Power Play in 2009: 35 for 165 (21%)
Power Play in 2010: 15 for 88 (17%)

Penalty Kill in 2009: 126 for 174 (72%)
Penalty Kill in 2010: 79 for 106 (75%)

The power play has been struggling of late and you can see it has dipped some in 2010. However, the penalty kill has made some strides. They're miles better at home on the PK than on the road for whatever reason.
